There are certain conversations in life that stay with you. Sometimes it’s because of what was said. Other times it’s because of the lesson you learned. Looking back, one conversation over lunch changed the way I think about branding, marketing, and the impression we leave with our customers.
Several years ago, I met another business owner at a McAlister’s Deli to talk about marketing. At the time, we each owned businesses, and like so many business owners, we were sharing ideas, talking about what had worked, what hadn’t, and how we were trying to grow our companies.
As we talked, he mentioned that he’d tried all kinds of promotional products over the years. Plastic pens, giveaways, and countless other marketing items. Then he reached into his pocket, pulled out a blue pen, and handed it to me.
He simply said, “Take this.”
I looked at it for a moment, not really sure what he wanted me to notice.
Then he asked, “What does that feel like?”
I remember looking at him with a puzzled expression. It was just a pen… wasn’t it?
I rolled it around in my hand for a few seconds before answering.
“It feels like a really good pen.”
He smiled and said, “Exactly.”
Then he explained something I’ve never forgotten.
He told me that every promotional product a business gives away says something about that business. A cheap pen may write just fine, but a quality pen leaves a different impression. It has weight. It feels substantial. It communicates professionalism and quality before a single word is ever spoken.
His point wasn’t really about the pen.
It was about perception.
That conversation changed the way I looked at branding. I realized that every item carrying your company’s name becomes an extension of your business. Whether it’s a pen, a brochure, a business card, a company shirt, or a promotional gift, it quietly tells customers something about who you are and what they can expect from your business.
That’s why I’ve always believed the goal isn’t simply to put your logo on a product. The goal is to choose products that represent your business well and reflect the quality of the work you provide. Every touchpoint is an opportunity to reinforce your brand and build confidence with your customers.
There’s one more part of this story that still makes me smile.
About a month after that lunch, we started dating.
The rest, as they say, is history.
To this day, whenever I recommend a promotional product to a client, I still think about that blue pen. It reminds me that branding isn’t about giving something away—it’s about leaving the right impression.
Sometimes the smallest things can leave the biggest impact.
